We’re looking for a Seasonal Water Resource Technician to help monitor and protect Nantucket's precious water resources.
Starting Hourly Rate: $21
(Please note that the advertised hourly pay rate may increase by $2 per hour, pending approval at the Annual Town Meeting.)
This position will include working within the Town of Nantucket’s (TON) Natural Resources Department (NRD) under the supervision of the Water Resource Specialist, to monitor, collect, process and test water quality samples.
The Water Quality Program manages Nantucket’s water resources by sampling and monitoring the Harbors and Great Ponds. This position is educational and provides broad experience as it relates to water quality in the field of marine science and aquaculture.
Water Quality Duties:
- Perform water sampling and monitoring of harbors, ponds, and streams
- Assist with NRD’s Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring Program and response to concerned public
- Use and maintain water quality technical equipment
- Assist with administrative tasks, public relations (regarding water quality), social media, and preparing informational and educational material
- May include assisting with: various hatchery tasks, field work, and participating in scientific dive surveys
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be a team player, however, comfortable working independently and willing to assist in departmental tasks outside of the job description. Must be familiar with microscope work, general laboratory techniques, able to multi-task, have a strong attention to detail, and have excellent record keeping and data entry skills. The candidate must be able to work early in the morning (start time 5 - 6 AM) in occasional harsh environments, comfortable with driving large pick-up trucks, and able to lift 50 lbs. A degree in marine science (or working toward a degree in marine science) is preferred. SCUBA certification or willingness to become certified before the start date is preferred.
