SEASONAL WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST (March – August) needed for a position with a non-profit organization, the Sandhills Ecological Institute (SEI), in North Carolina (NC). SEI partners with federal and state agencies to intensively monitor the threatened red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) population found within the NC Sandhills Region. RCW monitoring is also conducted on private lands with many properties enrolled in the US Fish & Wildlife Service’s Safe Harbor Program. A seasonal biologist will conduct nest checks within ~ 50 RCW groups, band nestlings, resight color-banded adults and fledglings, band/recapture adults as needed and manage datasets that have been maintained annually since 1980.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
Bachelor of Science in natural resource sciences is required. Experience with wildlife field surveys and operating 4-wheel drive vehicles is desirable. The applicant IDEALLY should have adequate experience climbing Swedish ladders to retrieve nestling red-cockaded woodpeckers (RCW) for banding that allows biologist to work independently as a sub-permittee. In addition, applicant IDEALLY can characterize the stage, shape and activity status of RCW cavities, conduct weekly RCW nest checks, identify banded RCWs with a spotting scope and have strong data organizational skills. Applicants with significant bird handling and similar passerine banding expertise will be considered in lieu of RCW experience. References for experience should be included with resume. Resumes lacking above experience will not be considered. Applicant must be able to work independently or with a team (vehicle provided). Must have a tolerance of biting insects and physically able to work long hours in the field, often in very hot/humid conditions. Weekend work necessary.
Hourly rate based on experience and skills.
Start date in March with some flexibility.
