Fantastic opportunity for an experienced Forest/Riparian Ecologist to lead projects targeted forest management plans, silviculture methods, riparian and upland prescription development, fuels treatment, and riparian restoration across the Pacific Northwest! This unique position offers opportunities to work on forest plans, habitat restoration projects, technical assessments, multi-disciplinary research, GIS modeling, and project management. This is a full-time position based out of the Fish Ecology Lab in Portland, OR.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Apply an understanding of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements to determine permitting strategies for forest management projects
  • Conduct research and prepare sections of NEPA documents (e.g., Environmental Assessments)
  • Analyze environmental impacts from forest management and describe them for environmental reports
  • Review and interpret technical reports and data on fuel reduction, silviculture, and harvest prescriptions and summarize them
  • Prepare forest management plans
  • Lead the development of upland and riparian forest prescriptions
  • Oversee project implementation, including contract and construction management
  • Harvest unit layout with proposed logging systems and prescriptions
  • Work on project teams to accomplish goals in other scientific disciplines
  • Mentor and work collaboratively with technical staff
  • Lead proposal and business development activities
  • Attend and present at scientific meetings

Education/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree and a combination of academic and field experience in Forest Management/Forest Resources
  • Knowledge of the principles of silviculture, fuels/fire, and forest resources management
  • Strong written and oral communication, including preparation of technical reports
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong GIS skills, especially in spatial analysis
  • Experience with conducting common stand exams, cruising, harvest inspection, and preparing sales
  • Experience conducting field investigations
  • Ability to track, manage, and prioritize workload and clearly communicate progress and status of tasks to project team and project managers.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Experience driving vehicles utilizing 4WD on narrow forest roads.

Preferred Experience

  • Advanced (M.S. or PhD) degree in forestry, natural resources, hydrology, fisheries, or similar discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in forest management, fuels/fires, silviculture, and conducting technical studies and preparing environmental reports
  • Experience conducting statistical analysis using R or a similar platform
  • Experience conducting NEPA analysis for EA's or EIS'
  • Experience in environmental consulting
  • Certification as a Forester
  • Experience performing technical studies in the Pacific Northwest
  • Experience in road layout, drainage, hydrology, and unstable slope assessment
  • Experience in water typing and submitting water-type modification forms
  • Experience and an understanding of the Northwest Forest Plan and monitoring protocols for USFS Region 6
  • Experience with forest stewardship
  • Familiarity with Pacific Northwest environmental regulations and permit application process

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to fulfill the essential duties and responsibilities of this position
  • Must be comfortable working in the field. Including forests, rivers, streams, and lakes
  • Must be able to work effectively and drive safely in inclement weather, including hot, cold, rain, fog, and smoky conditions
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds
  • Long periods of computerized data analysis in an office environment
  • Flexible hours (including weekends and evenings) and travel to remote areas for 4-5 days at a time

COMPENSATION: $100,000 - $120,000, depending upon experience. 401 (k) has a 3% match and full vesting after one year. The annual cash bonus has a 3% target.
