Earth Insight builds tools and momentum to prevent fossil fuel, mining, and industrial expansion from threatening vital ecosystems and Indigenous and local communities. Through the development of web-based mapping tools and innovative analytics founded on open-data and open-access data and code, we aim to provide communities and the environmental movement with tools to increase political and financial pressure and stop new fossil fuel and other destructive extractive industry developments, while charting alternative development pathways that respect biodiversity, human rights, and a stable climate.

About the position

The Senior Spatial Analyst reports to the Program Director, with potential future reporting to a Research Manager,  and collaborates closely with the broader research team and other Earth Insight staff to collect, process, analyze, and visualize spatial data. This role is responsible for developing high-quality maps, innovative visualizations, and insightful reports to support Earth Insight’s mission and strategic objectives. The Senior Spatial Research Analyst also assists in the preparation of communication products that support Earth Insight’s engagement efforts with partner organizations (Indigenous peoples and local communities, regional NGOs, international networks etc.) and at key international fora including but not limited to Conference of Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the COP of the Convention of Biological Diversity CBD), UN Ocean Conference (UNOC), etc. 

Earth Insight seeks candidates with a can-do attitude, a deep commitment to driving meaningful change from local to global scales, and curiosity about exploring new methods for analyzing and visualizing data. Demonstrable experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is required, and familiarity with open-source tools and libraries for spatial analysis, data management, and web mapping (e.g., Leaflet, Mapbox) is strongly preferred. This fully remote, exempt position is open to applicants authorized to work in the United States. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently perform data collection, digitization, and visualization using QGIS and other GIS software
  • Independently conduct quantitative data analysis to identify the threats associated with mining, oil and gas development and other drivers impacting local to global ecosystems, climate, biodiversity, and people
  • Contribute to maintaining spatial databases, including data entry, data quality control, and data organization
  • Conduct spatial/GIS based data analyses to identify the threats associated with mining, oil and gas development, and other industrial drivers impacting local to global ecosystems, climate, biodiversity, and people
  • Produce high-quality maps, innovative data visualizations, reports and other outputs,  in close collaboration with other team members and partners
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to provide support for various projects and cross-program priorities (e.g. press strategy), as needed
  • Work collaboratively with partner organizations and stakeholders 
  • Present our work at public events (e.g. conferences), as appropriate

  • Master's degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Geology, Development Studies or related areas. 
  • Advanced proficiency in vector and raster GIS and experience with remote sensing is required. An understanding of GIS modeling is an advantage.
  • 3-5 years of demonstrable experience with open GIS software, specifically QGIS and related software packages. 
  • Demonstrable experience with at least one scripting language (Python, R, SQL etc.).
  • Experience with basic web mapping (e.g. Felt, Leaflet, Mapbox etc.) and/or online dashboards is an advantage.
  • Experience in at least one of the following: extractive industries, environmental justice, Indigenous Peoples and community rights issues, forest or marine ecosystem conservation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional cartographic skills and an eye for detail and map design.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse, inclusive, and globally-minded team.
  • Proficiency in additional language/s (Spanish, French, Portuguese, Bahasa, Chinese) is highly appreciated.
  • Willingness to accommodate meetings outside of standard working hours when collaborating with international partners.

Compensation and benefits:

RLF is committed to providing competitive compensation and a total rewards package that emphasizes both base salary and comprehensive benefits. The salary range for this role is $80,000 to $100,000. Offers are based on qualifications and experience and our practice of maintaining salary equity within our organization.  We have an alternate Fridays off work schedule (employees work 40 hours one week, 32 hours the next week) and offer a comprehensive benefit package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401k plan with up to a 5% match, and generous paid time off including approximately 16 paid holidays per year.
