SNOWY PLOVER AND LEAST TERN BIOLOGIST, SAN FRANCISCO BAY BIRD OBSERVATORY
The San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) is seeking one full-time temporary biologist to assist with federally listed western snowy plover and California least tern field studies in salt panne provided by dry former salt production ponds. Key responsibilities include surveying plover and tern nesting habitat using a spotting scope and binoculars, re-sighting color band combinations, conducting predator surveys, floating eggs to determine development, and entering data. The position will run from March 3 through September 30, 2025 and will be based out of Milpitas, CA. During the peak of the breeding season, regular overtime will be required.
Required Qualifications:
- BA/BS in biology, environmental science, or related field
- Field experience in avian research, including experience using binoculars and spotting scopes
- Shorebird identification skills
- Strong work ethic, organizational skills, and attention to detail
- Experience recording accurate and detailed observations using digital technologies
- Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and a reliable personal vehicle
- Physical ability to walk several miles on level ground, traverse patches of deep mud, lift up to forty pounds, and operate a kayak (including launching, hauling out, and loading onto trucks)
- Enthusiasm and patience for long days in the field starting at sunrise
- Willingness to tolerate harsh field conditions (mud, sun, dust, wind)
- Ability to navigate using maps on a smartphone application
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Snowy plover and/or least tern experience, or experience with other similar species
- Experience working in San Francisco Bay salt pond and/or tidal marsh habitats
- Off-road driving experience
- First aid certification
- Proficiency with ArcGIS Field Maps, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Workspace apps
Compensation: The biologist will be paid between $25/hour and $29/hour commensurate with experience. This position does not guarantee continuing employment after its completion. An SFBBO vehicle or reimbursement for use of a personal vehicle will be available for pre-approved, work-related travel during work hours. SFBBO will supply all survey equipment, including binoculars, spotting scope, tripod, and window mount. This position is not eligible for benefits or paid time-off. However, after 30 days of employment this position will be eligible for 24 hours of sick leave and 24 hours of Covid-related leave.
