What We Can Achieve Together:

The Nature Conservancy is seeking a Southern Oregon Associate Director of Stewardship (SOADS) to oversee our preserves and stewardship programs across multiple geographies in the southern part of the state including iconic landscapes such as Sycan Marsh, Williamson River Delta, and Table Rocks. This role will serve as a leader in TNC’s collaboration with Tribes and other conservation partners to restore critical habitats and advance our shared interests in healthy lands and waters. They’ll supervise stewardship staff and pursue strategic opportunities to advance conservation outcomes through the management of our preserves and collaborative restoration activities on these properties. The SOADS will pursue the development of cross-cultural, co-stewardship partnerships with Tribal governments to increase and formalize preserve access and stewardship opportunities for Tribes in their ancestral homeland. They’ll provide project management leadership for the development of agreements and implementation of restoration efforts and serve as a leadership point of contact with Tribes, government agencies, and other partners in collaborative planning and capacity building to complete restoration and preserve management activities.

We’re Looking for You:

The Southern Oregon Associate Director of Stewardship is a leadership position focused on relationship building and land management in Southern Oregon, enabling TNC to bring its strengths in science, land management and collaboration to advance the development of a shared vision with Tribes and other partners for land stewardship and habitat restoration. We’re looking for candidates who’ll foster a collaborative and team-focused culture, providing strategic direction to best deploy stewardship staff talent and resources to efficiently care for our lands and support our conservation priorities and organizational values. This role will supervise and support a team of highly skilled stewardship field staff and identify effective cross-program opportunities to advance priority conservation strategies and outcomes. In this work, you will collaborate across TNC programs and local partners to actively support ongoing projects that increase Tribal access and co-stewardship in their ancestral homelands, with a particular focus on Tribal collaboration in the Klamath and Rogue River Basins to implement aquatic, wetland, and forest restoration activities.

Work location is flexible within southern and central Oregon, but the ability to regularly be on-site in the Klamath Basin and southwest Oregon is required, and up to 20% of the job may include additional travel to other locations. This position will have the option to work from a TNC office (Klamath Falls, Ashland, Eugene or Bend preferred), a home office, or a hybrid of TNC and home office. This position may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. Evening and weekend work may be required on occasion.

What You’ll Bring:

• BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience working with Tribal Nations, First Nations, or Indigenous Peoples to advance Tribal and First Nation priorities.
• Experience in effectively managing and leading diverse teams, adept at overseeing projects while ensuring effective workload prioritization and financial management.
• Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives, hiring and managing performance. This experience can include staff, volunteers, interns, etc.
• Experience cultivating partnerships, building relationships, and working collaboratively with teams to coordinate resources and achieve goals.
• Experience in using various computer systems, including database and project management applications.
• Excellent communication skills demonstrated through written, verbal, and graphical communication in English, enabling effective communication of ideas and strategies to diverse audiences.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with cultural knowledge and Indigenous communities, preferably from the Pacific Northwest.
• Experience in use of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and understanding of Tribal sovereignty and appropriate protocols for engagement.
• Experience in ecological land management, including aquatic, wetland, and fire-adapted forest restoration principles and current trends.
• Experience with grant writing, securing funding, and managing project funds (e.g. budgeting, contracting, reporting).
• A valid driver’s license.
