Position Overview
Chikaming Open Lands (COL), a land trust operating in Berrien County, Michigan, seeks a seasonal Stewardship Field Technician. Under the direction and supervision of the Stewardship Manager and Stewardship Field Supervisor, the Field Technician will participate in implementation of COL’s land stewardship activities. The position may also participate in other COL programs and activities. Three positions are available in 2025.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Stewardship: Under the direction and supervision of the Stewardship Manager and Stewardship Field Supervisor, implement management and maintenance activities in COL nature preserves. Activities may include, but are not limited to, implementing control of non-native/invasive species and other ecological restoration, maintaining trails and facilities frequented by the visiting public, working with volunteers on stewardship workdays, maintaining tools, equipment, and vehicles, and participating in monitoring/research activities.
Ancillary Duties and Responsibilities
- Education and Outreach: Assist the Education & Outreach Coordinator and Stewardship Manager with outreach activities and programs, as needed. Activities may include, but are not limited to, participating in COL outreach programs, participating in youth-oriented education programs, assisting with volunteer activities, and promoting activities within the community to increase awareness of and support for COL.
- General Administration: Assist in maintaining and updating files and records of nature preserves. Complete other duties as assigned by the Stewardship Manager or Executive Director.
Qualifications
The successful applicant will be a college undergraduate or recent graduate with coursework in biology, ecology, land conservation, natural resources, parks and recreation, or related fields. Previous field experience in land and natural resources management is desirable. Previous experience operating power tools and farm and/or lawn equipment is preferred. Must possess or be willing to obtain a Michigan pesticide applicator certification. Must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Applicant must be a self-starter with the ability to collaborate with a team and interact with a wide variety of audiences. Strong writing, organizational, and interpersonal/communication skills are mandatory. Requires proficient computer skills. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends is required. Ability to work in an office environment and in an outdoor field environment is necessary. Passion for land conservation is essential.
Employment Terms
The position, located in Berrien County, Michigan, is a 12-week, seasonal, full-time, hourly position with an expected wage of $16-19 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. The anticipated term of employment is May – August with flexible start and end dates. A typical full-time work week is 37.5 hours. Typical working hours are 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours required. For non-local applicants, shared housing (up to 3 people) in a summer cottage on a COL preserve may be available for the duration of the position.
