The Land Stewardship program at LC Nature Park is responsible for caring for its bison and elk, maintaining trails and facilities, and managing all stages of habitat restoration and management across more than 300 acres. This position offers prospective applicants the opportunity to be involved in a myriad of land management practices.

Hours: Approximately 10 hours per week 
Reports To: Stewardship Director

Job Responsibilities

  • Engage in hands-on habitat restoration projects to help preserve and enhance the natural environment at LC Nature Park. This includes the careful removal of invasive species that threaten native flora, ensuring the ecosystem's health and balance.
  • Participate in planting and seeding activities to restore native plant populations, promote biodiversity, and provide essential habitat for local wildlife.
  • Collect seeds from native plants to support our ongoing restoration efforts and ensure the continued propagation of vital species within the park.
  • Support the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of LC Nature Park’s equipment and facilities. This may include assisting with minor repairs, organizing tools, and ensuring all equipment is in safe working order.
  • Help maintain the beauty and functionality of the landscaping around the Mills Education Center. Tasks include weeding flower beds and the pollinator garden, planting seasonal flora, and weed-whacking to keep the grounds tidy and inviting for visitors and wildlife alike.
  • Assist in maintaining the park’s trails to ensure they are safe and accessible for all visitors. Responsibilities include removing debris from the paths, cutting back overgrowth, and picking up litter to keep the trails clean and welcoming.
  • Work alongside the stewardship staff to help care for our bison and elk herds, contributing to the health and well-being of these majestic animals. Tasks may include monitoring their behavior, maintaining their enclosure, and ensuring their habitat meets their needs.

Qualifications

  • This internship position provides you with work experience in land management. No previous technical experience is required, and our stewardship director will provide training on safe equipment and herbicide usage. Our stewardship team will supervise herbicide application.
  • This is a physically demanding position. Applicants must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs and be amenable to being on their feet for the majority of their shift, often with hand tools or a backpack sprayer. 
  • Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Safety is a priority at LCNP and we will cease outdoor work if there are hazardous conditions, but your days may be perfect, hot, cold, wet, dry, or mosquito-y.
