The American YouthWorks – Texas Conservation Corps (AYW TXCC) participants engage in hands-on conservation projects on public lands, coastal regions, National Parks and recreational areas across the Central Southern United States! The AYW Conservation Corps experience builds leadership skills, connection with community, and prepares young people with skills needed to enter the workforce with a strong work ethic and sense of service!
- Crew leaders work alongside members performing direct service to
serve as models and provide on-the-spot assistance. - Crew leaders serve as program drivers, hold cash cards,
communicate with partners about crew projects, ensure safety on
site, and report crew metrics from the field. - Crew Leaders provide guidance and support to members, including
reflection exercises, conflict resolution, advice for transitioning out
of AmeriCorps, etc.
This is a full-time seasonal term-based AmeriCorps position working outdoors that specifically focuses on gaining entry-level conservation experience in habitat restoration, trail projects, and more. The Texas Conservation Corps is a Program of American YouthWorks.

COMPENSATION (Monthly Living Allowance):
- Crew Leader $2,720 per month ($1,360 biweekly)
AMERICORPS TERM LENGTH
Austin, TX (1700 hour; 11 months)
- Crew Leader: May 19, 2025 – March 27, 2026
Educational Requirement:
- Crew Members: No high school diploma or GED required
- Crew Leaders: High school diploma or GED required

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Frequently required to walk and hike over long distances while carrying tools
- Ability to operate tools
- Heavy lifting, bending, and carrying up to 35-50* pounds (*depending on crew type)
- Walking and working on steep or uneven terrain
- Ability to work long days in adverse weather conditions
- Depending on crew type, ability to hitch, camp, and travel throughout the duration of an entire AmeriCorps term
REQUIRED AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Ages 21+ for Crew Leaders
- US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
- Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check
- Crew Leaders Only:
- High school diploma or GED
- Clear 3-year Driving Record
- Prior experience in conservation, camping, backcountry travel, or related fieldwork
Preferred
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather types while doing demanding labor with hand and power tools
- Function as part of a team with the ability to get along with members of all backgrounds and experience levels
- Strong service ethic and commitment to completing an entire term of service with a desire to serve the community and the environment
- Crew Leaders Only:
- Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in rugged terrain, often wearing a 45lb backpack and carrying tools

The AYW Conservation Corps experience builds leadership skills, connection with community, and prepares young people with skills needed to enter the workforce with a strong work ethic and sense of service!
The AYW TXCC Summer Program is an AmeriCorps opportunity for young adults 17+ to work with a crew on habitat restoration projects throughout Texas. These crews are open to current high school students, recent high school graduates, college students & young adults looking to spend a summer working on conservation projects throughout Austin, TX. Led by adult Crew Leaders, members will work on trail improvement and habitat restoration projects while engaging in environmental education.
