Scope of Work:
- Monitor current trails to document trail maintenance issues and assist with repairs to trails and structures
- Assist with the coordination and supervision of volunteer workdays as needed
- Assist with updating of trail systems maps as needed
- Assist with monitoring, documentation, and management of other recreational activities
- Write reports and complete other tasks as assigned
Background: The Monadnock Conservancy owns more than 25 properties totaling nearly 2500 acres and manages sections of popular public hiking trails in the Monadnock Region of southwestern NH. We strive to provide recreational opportunities that have a minimal impact on our valuable natural resources for people of all ages and abilities. As a Recreation Technician, you will learn how to manage public use of conserved lands, monitor trails and property boundaries, and document human/wildlife presence and activities. You will utilize online and phone apps for fieldwork and write professional reports to inform land management efforts.
Desired Qualifications: Our Recreation Technician will have a strong interest in conservation, land management, natural resource protection, and recreation. They will have the physical ability to walk long distances to remote areas over varied terrain. In addition to trail hiking experience, our technician will have excellent off-trail navigation skills using a GPS or GPS-based phone apps, and a map and compass. We seek a team member with strong interpersonal skills, strong writing skills with an attention to detail, and an ability to work independently or collaboratively. Reliable transportation, a mobile phone, and the ability to work weekdays are required. Experience with GIS, GPS, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and map interpretation are desirable. Additional experience with chainsaw operation and safety, foot bridge construction, kayaking or canoeing, wetlands identification, and the ability to identify sensitive or rare plants and communities are a plus. While much of the work will be field-based, office space will be provided at our headquarters in Keene. Remote work and Zoom meetings will occur on a regular basis. Tools and training will be provided as needed.
