Thompson and Associates Wetland Services (www.thompsonwetlands.com) provides environmental assistance on wetland and water related projects. We are a small firm with over 25 years’ experience in the Midwest.
We are currently looking to fill two seasonal positions that are available from May through September (dates somewhat flexible) to assist with the native tree and pollinator plantings, wetland and prairie management, trash collection, control of invasive species (pull; cut and herbicide; or spray herbicide), photograph wildlife and other management tasks on the restored Pike River Corridor in Mt. Pleasant, WI (Racine County).
Hours are ~16-24 hours a week. Work hours need to be somewhat flexible to work as a team and avoid outdoor work on rainy or very hot days. This position will provide an opportunity for you to gain marketable skills as you work with experienced professionals including local wetland and stream experts. You will have an opportunity to observe wetland delineation and other wetland projects. Recent interns have jobs with non-profits, consulting firms, the WDNR, Ohio DNR, the Orange County (CA) Water Resources Program, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Enthusiasm for field work and desire to learn new skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Ability to learn to field identify native and invasive plants & safely mix and apply herbicide.
- Attention to details and efficiency in data collection are desirable.
- Good physical condition (carry 20 lbs. on backpack sprayer) and willingness to work under sometimes unpleasant (i.e., hot, buggy, wet) environmental conditions including uneven ground.
- At least 2 years of college with a focus on ecology, botany, water resources or related field.
- Ability to interact positively with the public.
- Reliable transportation, driver’s license and car insurance.
COMPENSATION: Depending on experience, hourly rate $16.50- $18/hour for an average of 2-3 days a week (16-24 hours). Mileage allowance included.
