The City of Austin, MN is seeking a highly motivated, energetic individual for a three-month summer intern position at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center. Candidates can begin anytime from early May until June.

The successful candidate will:

  • Work consistently with the public by welcoming visitors to the nature center, answering questions and phones.
  • Complete transactions for rental equipment and gift shop merchandise.
  • Care for the Nature Center’s critters, including reptiles and amphibians.
  • Assist with astronomy viewings at the Sola Fide Observatory two Saturdays each month.
  • Help care for and maintain the Nature Center’s gardens and landscaped spaces.
  • Facilitating special events throughout the summer.
  • Support teaching staff in preparing for summer environmental classes for all ages.
  • Work in a variety of environments, rain or shine, including the Nature Center and surrounding property.

The successful candidate must:

  • Have a high school diploma (preference given to college students studying natural resources, biology, environmental education, or similar subjects).
  • Have good written and oral communication skills.
  • Be able to adapt to changes in time and weather while assisting with public programming.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Have good interpersonal skills.
  • Be able and willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and some evenings.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Have the ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Have the ability to walk at least two miles at a time.

Details:

  • Workweek is typically 36-40 hours per week and will be Thursday through Monday.
  • The hourly wage is $14.00/hr.
  • Intern is eligible for Minnesota Sick & Safe Leave accrual of one hour for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum of 48 hours for the summer.
  • Employment is contingent upon the satisfactory results of a background investigation.
