I Job Overview:

Job Title:                         Seasonal Environmental Educator

Department:                   Education

Classification:                  Non-exempt, Hourly

Job Type:                         Seasonal (June 2025 – August 2025)

Job Status:                       Employee, up to 40 hours/week

        • 5-10 weeks commitment preferred.
        • must be available for training week June 2-June 6

Reports to:                      Outdoor Adventure Camp Manager or Director of Education

Supervisory Role:            No

Travel:                             Yes – local travel is minimal. No – overnight travel.

II Job Summary:

The Seasonal Environmental Educator is responsible for connecting our Preschool through Grade 8 Outdoor Adventure Campers (OAC) to nature through engaging exploration and game play.

III Job Responsibilities & Duties:

LEAD CAMPERS (75%):

  • Teach and/or facilitate all explorations and game play throughout the week for your camp group of 12 campers.
  • Supervise campers during the camp day, drop-off, lunch, and pick-up.
  • Oversee the safety of your camp group and volunteer assistant, adhering to all procedures.
  • Manage the behavior of your camp group and reduce risk by setting clear expectations, anticipating possible outdoor hazards, and utilizing age-appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Delegate tasks to your group’s designated volunteer and/or intern to ensure effective set-up, clean-up or monitoring of activities.

PREPARE CAMP CURRICULUM (20%):

  • Attend camp training week (June 2, 2025 – June 6, 2025) to learn camp procedures and expectations.
  • Reference NCSL lesson plans, activities and resources to plan your camp sessions. Write lesson plans for your weeks of camp to match the assigned theme.

OTHER (5%):

  • On weeks where you are not responsible for a camp group, you may be asked to teach an individual program or event. These opportunities are scheduled based on availability.
  • Other duties as assigned.

IV Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Minimum 1 season of teaching experience with children in any setting.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification (to be provided by NCSL upon hire).
  • Enthusiasm, flexibility, dependability, good sense of humor, and positive attitude.

V Work Schedule:

You may be scheduled to work between 5 to 10 weeks during the camp season (40 hours per week for full day camps; 25 hours per week for half-day camps; variable additional hours for leading individual programs). This schedule is created based on your availability, your preferences and Nature Center need.

Example Schedule for a Full Day Camp:

  • 8:00 am: Arrive at the Nature Center to Prepare for the Day
  • 8:45 am: Report to Camper Drop-Off Location
  • 9:00 am – 3:00 pm: Campers on Site
  • 2:45 pm: Report to Camper Pick-Up Location
  • 3:15pm/3:30pm – 4:00 pm: Clean-Up and Prepare for the Following Day

VI Working Conditions:

  • Position requires lifting up to 15 lbs., frequent hiking up to 3 - 5 miles (sometimes on rough terrain), climbing stairs, kneeling, sitting, and bending.
  • The majority of the workday takes place outdoors along our trails.
  • Position requires the ability to address stressful situations appropriately in a fast-paced, interactive environment.

VII Compensation:

  • $16.00 per hour
