Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group (MSFEG), a nonprofit based in Seattle, has an exciting full-time, temporary position for someone who is passionate about working with diverse youth to restore salmon habitat. With the help of an assistant crew leader, the position will provide hands-on restoration training to a crew of 8 high school-aged students looking to enter the environmental field.
Position Title: Youth Crew Leader
Supervised by: Restoration Project Manager
Full-time, Temporary: 40 hours per week, 10 weeks: June 30- September 5, 2025
Pay Rate: $28 per hour.
Working Conditions: This position includes daily field work Monday-Thursday with occasional off site field trips and ability to work from home on Fridays. A work truck can be available for field work use.
Work Location: Public Parks in Auburn, Washington.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 1+ years relevant work experience in environmental restoration.
- Basic knowledge of Western Washington native and invasive plant species.
- Ability to supervise, delegate tasks, and create a positive and engaging work environment for a diverse group of high school-aged youth.
- Ability to provide youth with instructions and feedback on restoration techniques in a thoughtful, patient, and educational manner.
- Valid Washington State driver’s license and automobile insurance.
- Ability to pass a State background check.
- Ability to stay motivated while working outside four days a week in the summer.
- Ability to create and maintain a culture of safety on the crew.
- Ability to perform physical labor including bending, lifting, hiking, wading in streams, and working safely with tools in most weather conditions, including rain.
- Ability to think on your feet and adapt to unforeseen circumstances.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience leading an environmental restoration crew.
- 1+ years experience working with and teaching diverse youth in a positive and supportive manner.
- Knowledge of best management practices for ecological restoration of Western Washington riparian ecosystems.
- Knowledge of Pacific salmon species and associated life histories and ecological impacts.
- Extensive knowledge of PNW native and invasive plant species.
- CPR/First Aid Training within the last year
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage the crew’s time throughout the field work day (9am-3pm).
- Teach the youth the necessary skills to properly identify and remove invasive plants at restoration sites.
- Communicate with the crew to ensure punctual daily attendance.
- Complete daily work log to track attendance, restoration progress, monitor native plant health, and ensure all tools are accounted for.
- Ensure all work is performed in a safe and productive manner.
- Provide youth with daily feedback about their skills to help them improve, and more in-depth weekly feedback during one-on-one check-ins.
- Motivate youth to keep them on task.
- Lead and contribute to educational activities in the field.
- Bring drinking water and all necessary tools to work sites each day and return them to a nearby storage unit at the end of day.
- Communicate with the Project manager to ensure projects are completed appropriately.
- Delegate tasks, as appropriate, to Assistant Crew Leader.
