What We Can Achieve Together:
The Sycan Marsh stewardship assistant is an entry-level, seasonal position starting July 7th, 2025 and ending September 29th, 2025. The stewardship assistant will be working at Sycan Marsh Preserve as part of a team performing operations and maintenance and conducting general preserve stewardship duties supporting priority projects while developing their conservation and stewardship skills. During the stewardship assistant’s term, they will work under the supervision of an experienced steward performing field tasks such as fence and infrastructure maintenance, invasive plant monitoring and control (including herbicide use), vegetation monitoring, wildlife surveys, prescribed fire burn unit preparation, trail work, and data collection. The stewardship assistant will also assist with site, equipment, and facilities maintenance, and repair. They will maintain and preserve records using a computer, or mobile devices. The stewardship assistant will work in the field and office alongside TNC staff, partners, and volunteers, including youth volunteers, and independently. They may interact with visitors from the public hiking on the trail and enforce preserve use guidelines. Will work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances, and requiring considerable physical exertion.
Sycan Marsh Preserve is a 30,000 acre preserve in the South-Central Portion of Oregon, on the East slope of the Cascades. It consists of a large wetland surrounded by Ponderosa and Lodgepole pine forests. Housing on the preserve is provided free of charge and in a large off-grid field station with several guestrooms. The supervisor for this position also lives in the station but the stewardship assistant has their own private bedroom.

What You’ll Bring:
- High school diploma or GED and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
- Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. chainsaw, UTV, ATV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- 1 - 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.
- Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
- Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
- Ability to obtain driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
- Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
- PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.

Salary Information:
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $20.50 –22.50 / hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
