Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group (MCF) is looking for 3 enthusiastic individuals to fill the part-time positions of Teanaway River Outreach Interns. 

These positions are ideal for outgoing, organized, detail-oriented and independently motivated individuals with a passion for the outdoors, fish habitat restoration , and/or environmental science and education. Intern responsibilities will include providing outreach to recreationists in the Teanway Community Forest to educate them about current and upcoming fish habitat restoration projects along the Teanaway River and why they are important. 

Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group (MCF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring wild salmonid populations, their habitats, and ecosystem functions that support native fish species through restoration, protection, education, and community involvement throughout our region. Mid-Columbia Fisheries is part of a statewide network of Regional Fisheries Enhancement Groups working to restore and protect fish populations and habitat. Mid-Columbia Fisheries works with landowners and community partners to protect and restore fish habitat. The Mid-Columbia region includes the Yakima Basin, the Klickitat, White Salmon, and Wind Rivers, and numerous smaller tributaries in Skamania, Klickitat, Benton, Yakima, Kittitas and Franklin Counties. Schedule and Duration: These positions will work 2 days a week, primarily on Saturdays from 9am-5pm; with weekly check-ins and meetings on alternating Tuesday and Thursday mornings for a total of 10 hours/week. Applicants should be available to start on May 31st for orientation and training. The internship will conclude on August 30th. Occasional days off may be granted with advance notice at the discretion of the supervisor. 

Location: Teanaway River Outreach Interns will be based out of MCF’s Ellensburg Office.

Position Responsibilities

  • Co-lead a variety of outreach activities, including but not limited to: Educational booths, river walks, and/or campground talks to educate Teanway Community Forest recreationists about the importance of restoring fish habitat in the Teanaway River and notify them about ongoing restoration efforts
  • Promote responsible recreation and leave no trace principles to recreationists
  • Promote opportunities for community involvement with MCF and partner organizations (including volunteer stewardship and education events)
  • Keep a daily record of outreach activities performed and the number of people reached
  • Provide regular updates on public outreach to MCF staff, the Teanaway Forks restoration partners and Teanaway Community Forest managers in regularly-scheduled meetings on Tuesday and Thursday mornings;
  • Present a summary of public outreach work to the Teanaway Community Forest Advisory Committee at their quarterly meeting
  • Create a final report that details the number of people contacted, summarizes the comments and concerns heard, and provides information about recreationists' priorities to be included in restoration design.
  • Maintain professionalism with a variety of agency partners, MCF staff, and volunteers
  • Perform occasional stewardship tasks, such as trash removal from popular recreation sites

Required Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and the ability to safely drive MCF vehicles.
  • Self motivated, punctual, and dependable
  • Ability to serve outside in all types of weather and capable of occasionally lifting 50 lbs into and out of trucks and walking up to 3 miles daily over steep or uneven terrain
  • Friendly, outgoing demeanor and ability to work well in a team environment
  • Passion for MCF’s mission
  • A can-do attitude and willingness to be flexible and learn new skills
  • Comfortable working with and speaking to the public/community members
  • Previous job experience or coursework related to environmental science, conservation, restoration, fisheries, environmental education, and/or similar desired but not required

Compensation:  $16.66/hour
