Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that is committed to marine and terrestrial biodiversity conservation in the eastern Mediterranean. Archipelagos focuses on multidisciplinary scientific research and efficient conservation work. The organization operates beyond city centers and commercial interests and carries out conservation work alongside local communities, national and EU policy makers, and media. The Archipelagos’ Terrestrial Conservation Team carries out surveys throughout the year with a focus on the island of Samos, monitoring the status and the habitat of key species.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site role where the primary role will be coordinating research projects on the focus of GIS, Remote Sensing and Terrestrial Research. Including leading surveys, training, and guiding interns. As well as to assist the research team in conducting field research, surveys, and data analysis in the areas of environmental conservation and ecological restoration. 

We Offer

For the duration of the trial period (1 month), travel expenses with full board and accommodation are covered, with the possibility of remuneration based on experience.

After the trial period, for successful candidates. Full board and accommodation will continue to be provided.

Task Includes

  • Organising fieldwork with the different data collection platforms (e.g. camera traps, audiomoths, drones, satellite data).
  • Supervising BSc / MSc thesis projects (with help of Project Managers).
  • Organizing spatial databases.
  • Supporting the other teams in processing spatial data.
  • Assisting with divulgation activities with local communities and/or universities about terrestrial conservation.
  • Assisting the staff team with Base Management 

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, or a related field
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing techniques
  • Experience conducting fieldwork and collecting spatial data related to environmental or ecological studies
  • Strong data management and analysis skills, experience working with statistical software and different programming languages
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English
  • Ability to work in a team in dynamic field settings, often in adverse weather conditions
  • Familiarity with techniques such as setting up camera traps and/or audio moths is a plus
  • Commitment to environmental conservation and preservation of biodiversity
  • Experience managing and training students and/or volunteers is a plus
