Are you interested in getting paid to gain experience in environmental education and build community in conservation with opportunities to work in Big Thicket National Preserve?

Big Thicket National Preserve is seeking three Educational Interns to develop and present new curriculum-based classroom programs to the 1 st – 5 th grade students of Southeast Texas. Interns will also lead existing field trips in the country’s first National Preserve, work in Big Thicket’s visitor center, and experience numerous career development opportunities. This internship is a great fit for anyone pursuing a career in environmental education, elementary teaching, or the National Park Service!

Applicants must be 18-30 years old. A background in curriculum-based lesson planning is preferred but not required. Recent graduates encouraged to apply!

Big Thicket National Preserve is a part of the National Park Service and is located in Southeast Texas, near the city of Beaumont and 75 miles northeast of Houston. Over a dozen separate land and water units make up the preserve, considered to be one of the most biodiverse areas in the United States.

Location: Kountze, TX – Big Thicket National Preserve

This is a full-time seasonal term-based AmeriCorps Individual Placement position working outdoors that specifically focuses on individuals pursuing a career in environmental education, elementary teaching, or the National Park Service. The Texas Conservation Corps is a Program of American YouthWorks.

COMPENSATION (Monthly Living Allowance):

  • $2,720 per month ($1,360 biweekly)

Kountze, TX (675 hour)

  • January 13, 2025 – June 6, 2025

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Heavy lifting, bending, and carrying up to 35-50* pounds (*depending on crew type)
  • Walking and working on steep or uneven terrain
