Texas Surf Conservancy is pleased to invite applications for a Texas Oyster Policy Fellowship which will be in effect during the upcoming 2025 Texas Legislative session!

The mission of the Texas Surf Conservancy is to work collaboratively across disciplines and industries to promote the health of marine habitats and support oyster mariculture along the Gulf Coast of Texas.

The Texas Surf Conservancy Oyster Policy Fellowship provides an opportunity for a chosen applicant with an interest in aquaculture, oyster farming and conservation, to assist and support our Texas representatives in the next legislative session. This is a great chance for an applicant with interest and curiosity in cultivated oysters and conservation, to get an opportunity to learn how aquaculture policy is made in our state.

The fellow will be assigned to work at the Texas state capital from a representative’s office and will be expected to work on administrative tasks assigned by representative staff as well as collaborate with various peers, experts, researchers, academic and stakeholder groups, on work concerning proposed oyster-related bills. Examples of possible work assignments include policy research, bill tracking, constituent relations, supporting committee work, and communications. The fellowship may also provide opportunities for professional development, including networking events with policymakers, lobbyists, and other legislative staff.

Eligibility, skills and experience:  

  • Education: Recent college graduates, graduate students, law students, or professionals with a background in public policy, law, political science, or similar fields are preferred however the program may accept undergraduate students or others with relevant experience.
  • Ability to work from the Texas State Capitol in Austin, TX, in-person , full time, Monday through Friday, starting in January 2025 and continuing through May 2025
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent writing ability
  • Good people and teamwork skills
  • Ability to follow directions and follow through consistently
  • Strong focus on producing quality work products
  • Interest and/or knowledge in conservation and oyster policy
  • Sense of enthusiasm and interest in mariculture and conservation
  • There is no professional experience in policy required to be considered for this role

Selection Process:

After reviewing applications, a representative from Texas Surf Conservancy (fellowship sponsor) will reach out to candidates chosen for consideration and coordinate next steps. There will then be one or more rounds of interviews with the fellowship sponsor and related parties. Interviews might be held in-person, over the phone, or via video conference. The selected applicant for the fellowship will be notified by mid-late December 2024, along with onboarding and other information.
