GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wildlife Diversity Program performs entry-level to routine (journey-level) clerical work and manages all species in Texas that are not hunted, which comprises approximately 95% of the wildlife in Texas. Under the direction of the Urban Wildlife Biologists, this employee will have the opportunity to participate in multiple components of the Dallas/Fort Worth Urban Wildlife Program.  The employee will be working with a biologist to conduct wildlife research such as dove surveys and trapping, establishing and monitoring trail cameras, assisting with citizen science programs, preparing technical reports and outreach materials, accompanying the biologist on field investigations, and assisting with environmental outreach. Duties will include fieldwork for research projects and assisting with urban wildlife outreach, urban land conservation and management projects, and other duties as assigned.  Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.  Performs additional duties as assigned.  Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.
 
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months.
Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at time of application.
Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.
Experience:
None required.   
Licensure:       
Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
NOTE: Retention of internship contingent upon maintaining required license.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Current undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in Wildlife Science, Conservation Science, or Environmental Biology, Environmental Science or closely related Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program.
Experience:
Experience working or volunteering on projects involving non-game wildlife and/or plants.
Experience with native Texas wildlife species.
Experience working with nongame species.
Experience working with wild bird handling and banding.
Experience using trail cameras.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of native Texas wildlife species, native vegetation, and ecology.
  • Skill in using personal computers with working knowledge of MS Office software.
  • Skill in collecting and recording scientific data.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate volunteers.
  • Ability to conduct public presentations, communicating effectively to the public.
  • Ability to follow scientific protocols.
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in harsh weather conditions over rough terrain.
  • Ability to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to travel to various work locations.
  • Ability to participate in public outreach programs.
  • Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Required to work on holidays, weekends, evenings, and hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as necessary.
  • Required to work overtime as necessary.
  • Required to adjust to changing schedules.
  • Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
  • Required to use appropriate safety procedures and equipment.
  • Required to operate a State vehicle.
  • Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures.
  • Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
