GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Herpetologist, the Intern is responsible for assisting in all facets of field data collection, data entry, and science products. The position will be based primarily based out of Austin and/or a home based work duty station. Fieldwork will be focused on the Post Oak Savannah, Coastal Prairie, and Trans-Pecos ecoregions with sampling specifically focused on Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN). Assists with research on SGCN and the development of conservation status assessments using the NatureServe methodologies. Performs work activities during the day and potentially at night on occasions, under harsh field conditions in hot and humid climate with biting insects. Works under close supervision, with some latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures. Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months.
Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at time of application.
Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.
Experience:
None required.   
Licensure:       
I acknowledge and understand that I must possess a valid state driver’s license.
NOTE: Retention of internship contingent upon maintaining required license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Current undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in an accredited college or university in a Wildlife Science or closely related degree program.
Coursework in Ecology, Conservation Biology, or Herpetology.
Experience:
Experience in wildlife research and field biology techniques. Familiarity with basic reptile and amphibian taxonomy and data entry.
Experience with mapping systems, such as ArcMap or Google Earth.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of native reptile and amphibian species diversity.
• Skill in written communication, Microsoft software (Excel, Word, Power point).
• Skill in mapping software, such as ArcMap, QGIS, and/or Google Earth.
• Ability to understand and implement tasks through written or verbal instruction.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Required to work on holidays, weekends and hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as necessary.
• Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
• Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.
• Required to walk and work in soft unstable soils.
• Must conform to TPWD Safety policies and procedures.
• Required to travel 25% with possible overnight stays.
• Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
