Trail Ambassador

Position Description: Friends of the Inyo’s Trail Ambassadors (TAs) support the Inyo, Sierra, & Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forests and other partners by providing positive public service, outreach, interpretation, and trail maintenance on popular hiking trails throughout the summer season beginning around May and ending around October (weather/season dependent). The TAs hike with a smile and carry their shovels and crosscut saws like a banner on trails throughout the Eastern Sierra. Ideal candidates will be self-driven, enthusiastic, outgoing, and affable with the public, with knowledge of and a passion for the Eastern Sierra. Work will consist of trail maintenance, public outreach and education, coordination of volunteer projects, and natural-history interpretive hikes, including:
- Trail maintenance and improvement in backcountry wilderness and front country areas: work with tools and natural materials in a variety of topographies, environments, and weather conditions— occasionally overnight in the backcountry
- Developing and leading interpretive activities addressing the many ologies of the Eastern Sierra
- Engaging and communicating with members of the public
Required Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Must have ability to work in a team or individually in isolated, remote areas
- Must be able to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse audiences
- Must be comfortable with off-road mountain travel in vehicles and on foot
- Must possess current Wilderness First Aid and CPR certifications
Desired Skills:
- Ability to perform physical labor for up to 8 hours a day
- Experience hiking and camping in the Sierra Nevada backcountry
- Bi- or Multi-lingual communication skills
- Experience in Crosscut B-bucking or use of chainsaws
- Experience working with volunteers and youth
- Experience developing and providing interpretive activities
- Ability to operate handheld GIS/GPS technology
Compensation: $20/h + $200 Gear Stipend
