Job Description Summary:

Works as part of a 2-5 person crew to construct, repair, and maintain trails and related facilities.
Work involves heavy lifting, digging, carrying, brush cutting and operation of power equipment in the construction and maintenance of trails. Position requires hiking up to 10 hours per day, carrying a backpack and hand tools, and working outside in inclement weather and in mountainous terrain. Crew member positions do not need prior trails experience to be successful. A willingness to learn new skills, work safely with others, and contribute to a positive and productive work environment can be substituted for previous direct experience.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Work as part of a crew to perform routine, cyclic, and specialized maintenance, repair and reconstruction/construction on trail and related structures and facilities, including clearing (specialized), grading; path improvements, maintenance and repair; carpentry work; and use of associated tools and equipment.  
  • Work effectively as a member of a team in potentially stressful and difficult conditions. 
  • Contribute to a safe learning environment; willing and able to work in a collaborative manner to help carryout trail program objectives. 
  • Assist the Crew Lead in the organization and maintenance of tools and equipment in the field as well as general upkeep of the tools and materials 
  • Outdoor experience such as hiking or camping experience, environmental education, or other related experience. 
  • Effectively communicate ideas and concerns as they arise directly to supervisors, colleagues and organization staff. 
  • Represent the City of Boulder and Open Space and Mountain Parks with integrity to the public and project partners at all times. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to  problem-solve on an interpersonal or group level. 
  • Ability to follow written and oral direction involving task assignments and safety protocols. 
  • Ability to stay engaged with the task at hand for up to 10 hours at a time, especially when tasks are repetitive and physical in nature. 
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain acceptable background information.
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information including criminal conviction history.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • No preferred qualifications.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • No education or experience is required for this role.

Supervision received: Trail Program Manager or Trails Senior Program Manager

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical and Mental Effort: Ability to perform a wide range of physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment.  Physical ability to stand, bend, walk, and kneel.  Ability to carry up to 40 pounds while hiking on rough terrain.  Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person.  Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials.  Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other office equipment.  Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/ or operating a keyboard.  Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions.  
  • Work Environment: Works in an outdoor environment year-round.  Potential exposure to dangerous wildlife (e.g., rattlesnakes, mountain lions, stinging insects), toxic chemicals (paint), dangerous plants (poison ivy) and dangerous weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, lightning). Also works in an indoor setting at a desk.  
  • Machines and Equipment Used: Frequently uses standard office equipment including personal computers, calculators, cell phones, and copy machines; vehicles including four-wheel drive vehicles and pulling a trailer; a range of relevant and appropriate tools and equipment.
