Twin Rivers Charter School Outdoor Education and Youth Development Specialist Field Coordinator

The Outdoor Educator/Youth Development Specialist AmeriCorps Individual Placement is both highly demanding and highly rewarding, serving high school students identified as at risk of academic failure and/or presenting behavioral challenges. Outdoor Educator/Youth Development Specialists spend most of their time in direct contact with students, either providing direct student instruction in small groups in a classroom setting, providing environmental education in the field, or facilitating conservation-based, service-learning projects.

Duties and Responsibilities- Essential Functions (80% of time)

  • Assist in the coordination of the field and service work components of an outdoor high school including documentation of work performed.
  • Develop project specs and coordinate logistics for field operations
  • Develop and maintain protocols for checking out TRCS field equipment
  • Aid student learning in collaboration with the core content teacher
  • Provide individualized attention for struggling high school students
  • Lead youth in field education and on service-learning projects
  • Facilitate experiential learning in the outdoors
  • Act as a role model for youth, manage conflict-resolution
  • Camp with students and teaching staff on up to four, 4-day trips in a wilderness setting
  • Attend all AmeriCorps meetings and trainings
  • Members are not allowed to engage in any prohibited activities per the Prohibited Activities form
  • Transport student teams in 10-passenger transits to field sites
  • Knowledge and experience with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Duties and Responsibilities- Secondary Functions (20% of time)

  • Participate in student conferences, interact with parents, and participate in behavior management planning
  • Partner with other organizations and agencies, such as Eugene Parks and Recreation, The McKenzie River Discovery Center, Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council, US Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching and/or leading youth, conservation, reforestation and/or outdoor recreation skills
  • Desire for personal challenge and to help youth develop leadership and job skills
  • Strong communication skills and a vested interest in community service
  • Ability to participate in physical labor

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree Preferred or commensurate experience in Outdoor Leadership, Youth Development and/or conservation.
  • Valid driver's license and a history of responsible driving. Must be 21 years of age to qualify as a Northwest Youth Corps Driver.
  • Must provide current photo ID and proof of US Citizenship, US National or Permanent Resident status
  • Willingness to undergo a criminal and sex offender background check

Schedule Requirements

  • Full time (40-45 hours a week) with a minimum of 1700 hours during a ten-month service term from August 19th, 2024 to June 20, 2024. Exact dates are subject to slight change due to snow days and other unforeseen challenges in the calendar. **
  • Service hours are generally Mon-Fri, 8-4:30pm, with occasional night and weekend hours.
  • The member must complete a minimum of 1700 hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.

Program Benefits

$23,000 living allowance over the course of 10 months dispersed on a monthly basis.
Health insurance plan, training, loan forbearance, student loan interest accrual relief, City of Eugene bus pass, 8 days of instructional break.
$6,895.00 education award upon successful completion of service term and all program requirements.

The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing housing, food, work clothing, and a pair of 8-inch-tall leather work boots.

The member will not engage in any prohibited activities as stated in the Member Service Agreement. These positions are sponsored by The Corps Network's OYSI and EAP program.
