Job Overview
The Urban Forestry Instructor will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing vocational training programs at the Angell Job Corps Center in Yachates, OR, and the Great Onyx Job Corps Center in Mammoth Cave, KY.

This position is responsible for equipping disadvantaged youth, aged 16 to 24, with essential skills and knowledge in urban forestry practices, preparing them for successful entry into the workforce, military service, or further education. The instructor will facilitate a comprehensive learning environment that fosters personal growth, accountability, and a commitment to safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a full-day vocational training program in urban forestry, following the Job Corps Urban Forestry Training Achievement Record (TAR).
  • Provide engaging classroom instruction and hands-on practical training in skills such as tree planting, pruning, maintenance, and safety protocols.
  • Utilize a combination of theoretical and practical approaches, ensuring that approximately 70% of training is hands-on and 30% is classroom-based.
  • Mentor and support students in developing employability skills, including teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
  • Model appropriate workplace behaviors and reinforce the importance of professionalism and accountability in all activities.
  • Collaborate with the Work Program Officer to assist students with job placement services, resume building, interview preparation, and career transition strategies.
  • Monitor student progress daily, documenting achievements and areas for improvement in individual training files.
  • Conduct regular assessments of student competencies, utilizing criterion-referenced measurements to verify skill mastery in urban forestry practices.
  • Participate in Evaluation of Student Progress Panels (ESP) and provide timely updates on student performance in the Center Information System (CIS).
  • Enforce all safety regulations, including those established by the Forest Service and OSHA, ensuring a safe training environment.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for all equipment used in training, and document Tail Gate Safety Meetings prior to starting work projects.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and ensure compliance with all Job Corps policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with other instructors and center staff to integrate academic training with vocational programs, enhancing the overall educational experience for students.
  • Participate in regular staff training and development sessions, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Assist in establishing Work-Based Learning (WBL) sites and agreements with local employers to provide students with real-world experience.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of two years of experience in the Urban Forestry field, with a solid understanding of industry practices and standards.
  • Relevant certifications and/or licensure in urban forestry or related disciplines (e.g., ISA Ground Level Tree Worker).
  • Proven ability to effectively engage and work with youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate students.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities to effectively manage classroom activities and student assessments.
  • Proficient in using educational technology and software for tracking student progress and maintaining records.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to serve as a role model for students, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and a strong work ethic.
  • Willingness to adapt teaching methods and approaches to meet the individual needs of students.

The Urban Forestry Instructor will work a standard schedule of 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM (240 days per year) with adjustments made at the Center’s discretion. The role excludes federal holidays and student break periods. Substitute instructors will be provided for any extended absences.
