USGS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Location is negotiable and can be remote.

The USGS mission is to monitor, analyze, and predict current and evolving dynamics of complex human and natural Earth-system interactions and to deliver actionable intelligence at scales and timeframes relevant to decision makers. As the Nation's largest water, earth, and biological science and civilian mapping agency, USGS collects, monitors, analyzes, and provides science about natural resource conditions, issues, and problems.

Research Project: Wildfires amplified by climate change are impacting National Park resources, infrastructure, and visitor experiences. Effective fire management planning and response requires climate-informed decision-making, but integrating climate data can be challenging due to a lack of region-specific data, accessibility, and data application guidance. The ORISE participant will be involved in addressing the challenge of equipping park managers with the resources needed to develop climate-informed fire management plans, decisions, and treatments.

The ORISE participant will have the opportunity to assess, identify, and facilitate access to existing climate and fire data, as well as research and evaluate tools and data necessary to support effective planning and decision-making for future fire conditions. Additionally, the ORISE participant will have the opportunity to collaborate with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists and National Park Service (NPS) managers, contribute to the co-production of resources, and support the translation of science into actionable insights for park management.

Learning Objectives: The participant will develop a broad skill set in climate and fire data analysis, tool evaluation, and science translation. Through hands-on experience, they will learn how to assess partner needs and identify strategies to meet those needs. They will also gain a deeper understanding of how to assess critical data resources and apply them to real-world fire management challenges. Additionally, they will enhance their knowledge of co-production processes, learning how to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical decision-making in park management under changing conditions.

This opportunity will provide valuable exposure to a diverse network of professionals, including park managers, scientists, fire specialists, and representatives from multiple agencies. The participant will engage in cross-disciplinary collaboration, gaining experience in co-production and science translation. These experiences will enhance their ability to perform at the intersection of science and management, a critical skill set for roles in natural resource management, climate adaptation, and applied research.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: January 2025. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of DOI and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and USGS. Participants do not become employees of USGS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a doctoral degree in the one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past one year, or anticipated to be received by 5/1/2025.
