In cooperation with Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GLCA), the Great Basin Institute (GBI) is recruiting a Vegetation Technician to join the Research Associate (RA) Program. The RA will primarily focus on natural resource survey, recording, and monitoring associated with vegetation and landscape restoration projects. 

Duties:

  • Assist natural resources staff to plan and complete natural resource field work;
  • Assist vegetation management, biological surveys, invasive plant control management, habitat restoration, grazing management, and wildlife management;
  • Complete written trip reports;
  • Contribute to written technical natural resource reports;
  • Lead other employees and youth crews for natural resource field work;
  • Invasive species mapping and treatment, including the use of herbicide;
  • Must obtain state issued pesticide applicator license;
  • Work in the park’s greenhouse which includes monitoring, watering, planting, maintaining, and seed collection;
  • Periodic travel, overnight work, and non-traditional work hours, including weekends and/or evenings may occasionally be required.

Contract Timeline:

  • 26 week appointment beginning August 2024, or upon availability and completion of a Department of Interior background investigation
  • 40 hours per week; some weekend and nighttime work may be required when crews are out on projects

Location:
Encompassing over 1.25 million acres and tucked among the red-rock canyons and mesas on the Colorado Plateau, Glen Canyon’s unique desert region is characterized by expansive areas of exposed and uplifted rocks. Glen Canyon offers unparalleled opportunities for water-based & backcountry recreation. The recreation area stretches for hundreds of miles from Lees Ferry in Arizona to the Orange Cliffs of southern Utah, encompassing scenic vistas, geologic wonders, and a vast panorama of human history. Project work will be conducted in the Lees Ferry region.

Field conditions are typical for the high deserts. They can include hot, arid days with high exposure to the sun, as well as cold, winter weather. Spring weather is highly variable and unpredictable with extended periods of winds. Fall weather is usually mild.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Rate of pay: $23.50/hour
  • Health, dental and vision insurance premium paid 100% by GBI
  • Field per diem as applicable
  • Paid federal holidays
  • NPS-provided housing may be available to rent

Job Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in biology or a directly related field;
  • Experience applying herbicide;
  • Experience using a GPS to collect spatial data;
  • Ability to work safely and productively in remote field settings, including under adverse conditions. This will include overnight camping or backpacking for multiple nights, hiking in rough terrain, and working in adverse weather.

Preferred Skills:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in biology or a directly related field;
  • Knowledge of Southwestern US plant species and previous experience working in the Southwest US;
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS software for producing maps and maintaining databases;
  • Experience leading others.
