Volunteer & Data Coordinator

We are looking for a motivated and flexible self-starter to coordinate our volunteer-led programming & related datasets throughout the Anacostia watershed. This collection of programs includes our Community Science Water Quality Monitoring programming, Clean Waterways public trash cleanups, Family Fishing event series, and general outreach across the watershed. These programs require people-facing skills to recruit, train, and manage our amazing volunteers, as well as data expertise to process data, conduct quality control, and share out trends we find within these dataset to the public. To succeed in this role, you should have excellent people, data analysis, and communication skills.
Note- this is a 40hr/week salaried position that runs from Tuesday-Saturday, with regular evening obligations.
Duties are as follows:
- Recruit, engage, schedule, and otherwise manage an extensive volunteer group!
- Maintain a database of active volunteers, including contact information, availability, skills, etc.
- Write, manage & update project-specific SOPs, trainings, and manuals used to train & guide volunteers within various programs.
- Run weekly water quality sampling efforts (May-September), including coordinating volunteer sampling efforts, sample transportation, and the processing of sampling in our in-house lab.
- Coordinate partner organizations who utilize ARK’s trash sorting procedures at cleanups through the watershed, including attending cleanup events for quality control.
- Data upload & management of both our water quality and trash categorical data.
- Write public-facing updates on trash and water quality programs, ranging from annual reports to blog/social media posts to share data with the public.
- Host ARK’s private & public cleanups alongside ARK staff and volunteers.
- Assist staff with other programs as needed!
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences or related science field
- Experience managing datasets & creating data-centered reports.
- Basic lab and field science skills.
- Excellent communication, presentation, writing, and interpersonal skills.
- An energetic self-starter and quick learner with the ability to work in teams and individually
- Strong self-efficacy & time management skills
- Possess a commitment to environmental protection and the environment
- Regular access to a car to transport cleanup equipment and/or water quality samples
Preferred:
- Lab / Field data collection experience
- Experience with public-facing science communication (reports, blogs, presentations, etc.)
- Knowledge of either single-use plastic legislation efforts in the DMV and/or regulation of recreational water quality.
- Experience coordinating large groups of people
