Primary Purpose of this Position:
The North Carolina Aquariums at Pine Knoll Shores is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Volunteer Services Coordinator. Reporting to the Education Curator, this position will be responsible for managing all aspects of the Aquarium's volunteer program which consists of volunteers of all ages, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and talents.  The contributions of volunteers play a crucial role in furthering the aquarium’s mission of inspiring appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environments.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Actively recruiting volunteers, defining volunteer roles and responsibilities, providing orientation and training, organizing professional development opportunities for volunteers.
  • Creating and updating volunteer manuals and program guides.
  • Overseeing all volunteer schedules, coordinating volunteer activities, and tracking volunteer service hours.
  • Evaluating and coaching volunteers, coordinating volunteer recognition activities, and serving as the Aquarium's representative to other volunteer organizations.
  • Overseeing the recruitment, screening, orientation, training, and supervision of the Junior Volunteer program.
  • Providing training, oversight, and feedback to the assistant volunteer coordinator.
  • Leading programs such as high school job shadows, group volunteers, and teen conservation programs. 
  • Working with the Dive Safety Officer to assist and coordinate the volunteer dive program for the Aquarium.
  • Working within the Education Department to support all educational programming. This may include working "on the floor" at touch pools and discovery carts, leading public education programs and live animal encounters, and facilitating other educational programs as needed. 

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Weekend, evening, and holiday work will be required.
  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license within 90 days of employment.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

  • Experience managing a volunteer program at a zoo, aquarium, park, museum or tourist attraction.
  • Experience in administrative work, including working with different computer software, databases.
  • Experience working with and supervising adults and youths.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution;

OR

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND four years of work in volunteer services enabling the applicant to acquire the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
