The Position
The Waste Recovery Manager will lead I Love A Clean San Diego’s recycling, compliance, and waste diversion programs, including managing WasteFreeSD.org which connects users to over 2,000 recycling and reuse centers. This role will oversee various recycling and waste programs including: recycling events, school recycling infrastructure placement and support, used oil compliance inspections, and business recycling programs. Responsibilities include supervising full-and part-time staff, managing program budgets, and ensuring financial accountability. Success in this role requires strong financial and project management skills, contract compliance, knowledge of local environmental regulations, and excellent organizational and communication skills.

Areas of Responsibility:

Program/Staff Management – 60%

  • Lead activities related to WasteFreeSD.org online database and call center - Provide quality information and customer service to the public regarding household hazardous waste, as well as recycling, repurpose, repair, and disposal information
  • Oversee waste recycling infrastructure programs including inspections; coordination with haulers, school districts, and businesses; training for staff and students; and monitor success
  • Develop long-term, strategic vision for programming, growth, and development of the Waste Recovery Team
  • Attend and work cross-departmentally to support ILACSD events and programs

Administrative Oversight– 20%

  • Staff supervision of the Waste Recovery team, including coaching, performance assessment, professional development, workload management, administrative tasks, and hiring and onboarding
  • Create and monitor annual operating budget for the Waste Recovery Department and track milestones
  • Facilitate department meetings and maintain safe working conditions for employees
  • Generate and monitor monthly and ongoing status reports
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations

Community Outreach & Partnership Stewardship– 20%

  • Lead public education and outreach efforts to promote waste reduction, recycling and programming in local communities
  • Develop partnerships with local governments, businesses, and community organizations to expand ILACSD’s recycling programs and increase awareness
  • Act as a liaison between ILACSD and donors; balance partner goals, team capacity and ILACSD priorities including communicating contract and grant requirements to staff
  • Identify and pursue creative opportunities for outreach to accomplish goals and expand ILACSD’s reach including media and press interviews
  • Represent ILACSD at public-facing events including government meetings, conferences, and corporate meetings

  • Enhanced performance of WasteFreeSd.org, increasing user engagement and expanding reach
  • Efficient management of program budgets
  • Ability to handle confidential information tactfully; exercise discretion and independent judgment
  • Effective management of staff, ensuring clear alignment with organizational goals and values
  • High levels of community participation in recycling events and programs
  • Success in educating the San Diego region on proper recycling practices

  • Outstanding organization and attention to detail
  • Effective written and spoken communication for diverse audiences; comfort public speaking to audiences of various sizes both in-person and virtually
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Eager to troubleshoot and work independently to anticipate challenges
  • Proven process in grant/contract administration including research, submissions, stewardship, and compliance; preferred experience with grants to support environmental programs and activities
  • Knowledge of environmental challenges facing San Diego County, especially waste and recycling issues
  • Demonstrated ability to assess staff performance and deliver actionable feedback
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; strong attention to details

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook), CRM experience preferred
  • Reliable transportation; ability and willingness to travel
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed that may include weekends and/or evenings
  • Must be able to lift and move objects up to 40 lbs
  • Bilingual (English/ Spanish) bonus!
  • Ability to pass a background check prior to employment and on an annual basis

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Full-time, Non-Exempt
  • Starting rate: $28 per hour to commensurate with experience
  • Mileage reimbursement (Current CA reimbursement rate)
  • Paid time off (PTO starts at 15 days accrued annually) and generous paid holiday schedule
