The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization is seeking a Water Quality Monitoring Intern for the summer of 2025. Come get valuable experience and help us protect and improve the water quality of the Mississippi River!
About the Position
The Water Quality Monitoring Intern is responsible for providing assistance to Environmental Specialists, the Water Resources and Instrumentation Specialist, the Water Resources Data Analyst, and the Monitoring, Assessment, and Research Program Manager to carry out the activities of the MWMO monitoring program.
Essential Duties
- Collect water quality samples from the main stem of the Mississippi River.
- Monitor stormwater discharge at key outlets to the Mississippi River.
- Help install, operate, and maintain monitoring equipment in the field that are necessary to implement the monitoring program.
- Record monitoring data regularly and accurately in the database for analysis.
- Complete special projects as needed by the MWMO that fit the intern’s interests and skills. Such projects might include: helping to populate a GIS database with information about historic MWMO projects, producing bathymetric maps of the Mississippi River, or analyzing trends in pollutants in the Mississippi River.
Compensation
The position will pay $18.50 to $19.50 hourly, based on experience.

Commitment
The internship will last from May–August 2025, 30–40 hours a week. Starting and ending dates are negotiable.

The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization works to protect and improve water quality, habitat, and natural resources in an urban watershed that drains directly into the Mississippi River.
The MWMO partners with our member communities to invest in green infrastructure that captures, cleans, and reuses stormwater and conducts education and outreach to promote active environmental stewardship among residents. Our team monitors and tracks water quality in the watershed to help target projects, share accurate water quality information, and ensure MWMO is following best practices and the current science in all work we do.
