POSITION SUMMARY

The Benzie Conservation District (BCD) is hiring a Water Quality Technician to support the regions aquatic invasive species and water quality goals. This position involves a combination of field work, data analysis, public engagement, and collaboration with BCD staff and partners on conservation initiatives. The Water Quality Technician will help operate mobile boat wash stations, conduct aquatic plant surveys, monitor water quality on inland lakes and streams and analyze boater movement data to identify high-risk pathways for aquatic invasive species (AIS) spread. The role also involves working with partners to improve regional AIS tracking and assisting with public education efforts. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. A genuine enthusiasm for our mission and natural resource conservation is essential.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in field activities, including mobile boat wash events, aquatic plant surveys, and water quality monitoring
  • Collaborate with partner organizations, BCD staff, and volunteers to conduct outreach events and water quality work
  • Engage with boaters, anglers, and other community members, educating them on water quality and AIS prevention strategies
  • Develop and deliver educational materials and programs related to AIS and water quality protection
  • Record, manage, and analyze data from field activities using Excel and other online platforms
  • Research and compile AIS distribution data and analyze boater travel patterns to identify high-risk lakes for AIS spread, helping prioritize prevention and response efforts
  • Transport (with BCD vehicle), set up, and operate mobile boat wash unit and field gear
  • Maintain boat wash equipment, troubleshoot issues, and out-source repairs when needed
  • Ensure adherence to BCD policies and safety procedures during all activities

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & PREFERRED SKILLS

  • High school diploma required; Credits toward a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Science, Limnology, Environmental Education, or related field preferred
  • Outgoing and confident communicator with the ability to engage and communicate with the public, volunteers, and BCD partners
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to tow a trailer (or willingness to learn)
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of conditions, including on and around water
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends and holidays
  • Passion for natural resource stewardship and environmental protection
  • Experience with data collection, management, and computer skills
