The Department of Natural Resources is looking for a bright, quick-thinking individual to fill the Initial Attack Heavy Equipment Operator role. This position will be based in the Olympia area and be part of one of the busiest fire units in the DNR’s South Puget Sound Region.Duties
Responsibilities:
- Position will be responsible for the safe and effective operations of primarily a firefighting bulldozer, and the use of transport trucks and trailers. When not assigned to fires, heavy equipment operators will support fire leadership within the fire unit. They will work as a line qualified firefighter, help with prescribed fire preparation and implementation, and assist with other forest resilience-related work.
- There may be potential to use or train on firefighting excavators.
- We would like to see an individual who would like to work on advancing fireline qualifications as opportunities develop.
Required Qualifications:
- Two years of experience operating dozers or excavators in a forested environment.
- Two years of documented experience operating Class A CDL-rated transport equipment to include lowboy trailers, tilt bed trailers, tilt bed transport trucks, etc.
- Team Leadership -- Actively takes steps to build a cohesive and results-oriented team.
- Decisiveness -- Makes timely decisions even when data is limited or when solutions may produce unpleasant consequences. Under emergency or ambiguous circumstances, can produce an effective action plan on a timely basis.
- Tact and Diplomacy -- Responds to difficult, stressful, or sensitive interpersonal situations in a way that reduces or minimizes potential conflict and maintains good working relationships among internal and external customers.
