Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for direction and performance of fire suppression activities on department-protected lands and through agreements, on Federal and Tribal lands; acting as Incident Commander, or assisting the I.C. Responsible for making rapid decisions regarding the protection of life, forest resources, and property. Responsible for control of staffing and equipment to ensure efficient and effective control of the landowner and general contingency funds 
  • As directed by the supervisor, meet with other agencies, interest groups, industry, and individuals concerning agency programs and activities to gather and provide information about the department.
  • Review conditioning and approval of burn permits. Conduct site visits to verify application proposals, including review of tonnage estimates or at other times to inspect for compliance. Document, resolve, and mitigate smoke and burn complaints
  • Conducts fire tool inspections including field site visits and follow-up visits for fire tool compliance during closed season. Monitors logging activities for compliance with IFPL operating restrictions.
  • Assists in developing waivers for operations working outside IFPL restrictions, conducts site visits, provides recommendations for conditions, and performs follow-up site visits as appropriate.
  • Assists with wildland fire training for seasonal fire crews, permanent employees, and partner agencies. This includes formal group training or informal skills testing. Acts as lead and assistant instructor for various agencies, NWCG, and relevant courses. Actively participates in instruction at Interagency Fire Training Academies.
  • Attends fire training and takes advantage of training assignments to meet the department and personal fire certification goals.
  • Facilitate firefighter equipment check-in/out. Serve as fire cache or attic manager, maintaining clean, orderly conditions, conducting inventories, and creating resupply orders. Coordinate with seasonal firefighters and others for efficient distribution of supplies and equipment.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Four years of experience working in wildland fire suppression.
  • Experience working in a wildland fire environment at the NWCG Single Resource Boss and ICT5 Qualifications level and maintaining the currency of that qualification.
  • Minimum of 12 months of successful supervisory experience, which may include fire line supervision.
  • Experience working in wildland fire prevention/education programs.
  • Experience successfully implementing management goals, strategies, and resource allocation.
  • Excellence in written and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge of wildland fire suppression tactics.
  • Ability to serve as an instructor for NWCG wildland fire courses.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and successfully communicate with the team members.
  • Ability to successfully work independently planning, prioritizing, and completing work on schedule.
  • Ability to develop and implement training plans.
