The NBGI Foundation is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Wildlife Biologist/Natural Resources Manager to support the BGAD Natural Resources (NR) Program. The role focuses on the management and conservation of BGAD’s diverse ecosystems, including endangered species, forestry, wetlands, wildlife, and outdoor recreational areas. This individual will work closely with the BGAD Environmental Office to oversee the wildlife and land management activities, coordinate habitat restoration efforts, and support game and fishery programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Management & Land Management:
    • Assist in the management of BGAD lands, including wildlife and habitat conservation.
    • Implement prescribed burns, manage native seed harvesting, and invasive species control.
    • Maintain and manage the educational facility on Lake Gem.
    • Oversee the manipulation of moist soil units in partnership with KDFWR and Ducks Unlimited.
  • Wildlife Committee Coordination:
    • Collaborate with the BGAD Wildlife Committee to develop and review objectives for game management programs (Quality Deer Management, Northern Bobwhite Quail Restoration, wild turkey, and small game initiatives).
  • Wetland Habitat Assistance:
    • Assist with wetland protection, restoration, and enhancement efforts for migratory birds and waterfowl.
    • Secure permits through US Fish and Wildlife Services for migratory bird management.
  • Muddy Creek Restoration:
    • Support the delisting of Muddy Creek from the federal 303(d) impaired stream list.
    • Implement best management practices (BMPs) for erosion control, stream stabilization, and wetland creation.
  • Deer Check Station Oversight:
    • Ensure compliance with Kentucky wildlife regulations and support KDFWR biologists in monitoring deer check stations.
    • Collect biological data to help prevent Chronic Wasting Disease and investigate suspicious wildlife deaths.
  • Boundary Posting & Signage Management:
    • Coordinate the posting of boundary and project signage to restrict traffic in restoration areas.
    • Work with the BGAD Land Manager for approval before implementation.
  • Technical Support:
    • Provide environmental assessments and compliance documentation for natural resource projects.
    • Coordinate approvals for any ground-disturbing activities.
  • Wildlife Surveys & Data Collection:
    • Collaborate with Eastern Kentucky University on wildlife population surveys and provide technical guidance on management strategies.
    • Assist in evaluating injured wildlife and collecting data on deer and turkey populations.
  • Fishing Recreation Management:
    • Work with KDFWR to manage fish populations, assist with fish stocking, and maintain recreational fishing resources at BGAD lakes.
  • Educational and Research Support:
    • Promote educational and research programs in collaboration with local universities and schools.
    • Provide technical assistance to grazing lessees and support local research and educational initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Natural Resources Management, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Experience in land management, wildlife conservation, and habitat restoration.
  • Familiarity with federal and state regulations related to wildlife and natural resources.
  • Ability to work in partnership with state and federal agencies.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
