Service Location: Elko, NV
Host Site Agency Mission: The Nevada Department of Wildlife offers wildlife education programming, as well as hunter, angler, archery, boating, and urban wildlife education, in classrooms and communities across the state. The Nevada Department of Wildlife Conservation Education Program reaches thousands of participants each year across all regions. The Department’s educational programming helps to foster NDOW's mission: "Connecting people to wildlife in a positive way."
Member Position Summary: The Wildlife Educator, an AmeriCorps member, is an essential member of the Conservation Education team. The AmeriCorps team member will primarily support statewide classroom and community wildlife education programming within our Eastern Region (Elko, Lander, White Pine, and Eureka counties). Additionally, the AmeriCorps team member will also assist in developing and facilitating regional outdoor education events, clinics, and field trips to include activities such as archery, fishing, shooting, and hunting. AmeriCorps members can expect to travel, camp, and work outdoors, sometimes during periods of extreme heat or cold. All required travel will be in state and will be reimbursed. Secondary duties will include assisting in development of new programming, training volunteers, and assisting with volunteer projects. Lastly, the AmeriCorps team member may assist other divisions with fieldwork if needed.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Facilitate wildlife education programming in the Eastern Region
- Develop and conduct diverse community programming with concepts that connect people to Nevada’s wildlife and outdoor recreation
- Develop and assist with angler education, hunter education, and archery education events, clinics, fieldtrips, and community events
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Assist in recruiting and training volunteers
- Participate in and assist with various volunteer projects
- Support divisional field efforts when needed or as time outside of primary duties allows
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to engage with the public via extensive public speaking (i.e. public presentations and classroom programming)
- Strong communication skills
- High degree of initiative and ability to take on assigned tasks independently
- Ability to successfully complete tasks given a very detail-oriented environment
- Exceptional organizational skills
- Ability to work a non-traditional work week, including nights and weekends
Required Academic and Experience Qualifications: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent or agree to earn a high school diploma or equivalent before using an educational award. A bachelor’s degree in education, science, outdoor recreation or a related field is preferred. Must be a U.S. citizen.
Additional Guidelines or Expectations: AmeriCorps members are required to wear at least one piece of AmeriCorps gear (i.e. AmeriCorps button, AmeriCorps t-shirt), provided by the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation, every day during their term of service. When the member is facilitating a program, they must be in uniform. AmeriCorps members must participate in a minimum of three National Days of Service during their term of service and may participate in additional service projects.
Member Benefits: AmeriCorps members receive a living stipend of $13,235, a $3,697.50 education award upon successful completion of service, five PTO and five USL days, and professional development opportunities throughout their term of service.
Evaluation and Reporting: Members will receive a half term and an end-of-term performance evaluation from their site-supervisor and the AmeriCorps Program Director. Members will submit their biweekly Member Service Logs (timesheets) and weekly activity reports to their supervisor to be approved.
