Title: Wildlife Field Technician 

Purpose: Rogue Detection Teams is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Wildlife Field Technician to join our team in 2025. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to critical wildlife conservation efforts.

Location: Operations based in Washington State, work conducted primarily in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, and California).  

Department: Wildlife 

Employment Type: Full-Time Seasonal Contractor, with the possibility of transitioning to Full-Time Employee status contingent upon performance evaluations.

Length: The project is estimated to take 18 weeks, but this may change depending on unforeseen circumstances or adjustments to the project scope. The project progress will be regularly monitored to ensure the timeline remains realistic.

Salary: $3000/month

Start Date: March 15, 2024

About us: Our organization conducts field research globally in remote locations, collecting and disseminating high-quality data to researchers, academic institutions, and governmental agencies. We employ non-invasive methodologies to detect a wide variety of wildlife species.

The position will include PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Multi-day expeditions through rugged landscapes like mountains, deserts, or jungles, requiring the carriage of heavy backpacks containing essential supplies like food, water, shelter, and equipment.
  • Setting up and maintaining a campsite, cooking outdoors, and managing personal hygiene and sanitation in a wilderness setting. Access to electricity, running water, and cellular service may be limited or unavailable.
  • Candidates should be comfortable with solitude, capable of independent problem-solving, and able to maintain a positive attitude in the face of challenges.
  • While communication may be limited, candidates should be able to check in regularly with supervisors and colleagues via satellite phone or other available means.
  • Candidates must follow established safety procedures and guidelines to mitigate risks associated with remote work.
  • Operate four-wheel drive vehicles, snowmobiles, and all-terrain vehicles. Experience hauling trailers in mountainous conditions is preferred.
  • Working alongside a detection canine. No prior experience or personal dog is required.

Position responsibilities:

This job requires fieldwork (80-90%) and data management (10-20%) from March 15th to August 1st, with potential for extension and full-time employment. The Wildlife Technician will:

  • Monitor and collect biodiversity data using noninvasive techniques
  • Ensure data quality and consistency
  • Work long hours in remote, adverse conditions
  • Navigate and provide first aid in the backcountry
  • Operate GPS, chemicals, ATVs, 4WD vehicles, power equipment, and other tools
  • Work in areas with wildlife and hazardous settings
  • Make independent decisions and communicate effectively
  • Analyze data and understand large carnivore ecology
  • Support QA/QC and conduct diurnal and nocturnal surveys
  • Research locations and collaborate on solutions
  • Collect and preserve biological samples
  • Investigate predation sites and track animals
  • Identify mammals by sight, sound, and track

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two field seasons or four wildlife technician positions. If you lack the required professional experience, describe in detail how your personal experiences compensate for this gap.
  • Backcountry experience.
  • Ability to work alone in remote areas.
  • 4x4 vehicle preferred (mileage reimbursed).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Willingness to work with a detection dog. Prior experience with canines is not obligatory; however, applicants must be amenable to collaborating with and independently caring for a detection dog subsequent to orientation.
  • International applicants: valid US work visa and bank account.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher (wildlife studies, sciences, or writing preferred)
  • Remote field experience in conservation or ecology
  • Strong safety consciousness
  • Experience with sensitive species habitat and predator surveys
  • Proficiency in biological data handling (fecal samples or live animal)
  • Wilderness First Aid or First Aid Certification
  • Technological savviness
  • 4x4 forest road navigation skills
  • Travel flexibility and independent problem-solving
