National Forest Foundation (NFF) is pleased to offer a regular, full-time position that will manage projects and support partnerships to implement the Wood for Life tribal fuelwood initiative and other key forest health projects throughout the Southwest. Wood for Life is a partnership that connects biomass and small diameter timber from restoration projects with communities that rely on firewood for home heating and other uses.

Position Function: The Wood for Life Coordinator reports directly to the Southwest Region Director and works closely with the Southwest Field Program team, other NFF staff, and Wood for Life partners to provide project management, contract management, and program development support to help connect wood from forest restoration projects with communities in need of firewood, as well as other NFF priority restoration projects. The incumbent is responsible for helping develop and implement conservation programs with the U.S. Forest Service, communities, conservation NGOs, Tribal Governments, Indigenous nonprofits, and private sector partners to support strategic initiatives and long-term goals in the Southwest.

Position Duties and Responsibilities: The Wood for Life Coordinator will:

  • Build and sustain close and mutually beneficial relationships among federal and state agency partners, Tribal governments, local governments, Indigenous community groups, nonprofit organizations, and the NFF to implement effective community-based conservation partnerships including the Northern Arizona Wood for Life partnership.
  • Coordinate and manage Wood for Life projects and other restoration efforts, providing oversight of on-the-ground project implementation (e.g., working with forest thinning crews, coordinating between U.S. Forest Service and contractors, facilitating final inspection, coordinating access for firewood, etc.)
  • Help develop and implement work under Master Stewardship Agreements and Challenge Cost Share Agreements with the U.S. Forest Service, including for Wood for Life, forest restoration, watershed improvement, and recreation enhancement projects.
  • Coordinate and develop invited grants, Requests for Proposals and contracts for Wood for Life and other forest restoration projects, and work with NFF to select awardees and oversee implementation of projects.
  • Report on outcomes and deliverables of Wood for Life and other forest restoration projects; outcomes include a verbal and/or written report related to each project as required by funders.
  • Identify and provide support for the development of partnerships and grants that support expanding capacity for Wood for Life and other restoration projects.
  • Effectively communicate with and engage stakeholders and the public in the Wood for Life partnership through facilitated meetings, outreach and awareness efforts, field visits, communications products, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Maintain a breadth of knowledge about current trends, emerging issues, policy interventions, and innovations in the field of forest restoration, community wood banks, Tribal sovereignty, and community-based partnerships.
  • Serve as a point of contact for the NFF Wood for Life activities occurring in Northern Arizona and coordinate internally with other NFF and Forest Service Wood for Life program activities occurring across the US including in Colorado, New Mexico, and Idaho.
  • Assist as necessary with the NFF's program of work across the Southwest which may include the management of diverse, short-term projects.

Location: The location for this position is northern Arizona with a preference for Flagstaff, AZ. Applicants must be able to travel regularly throughout Northern Arizona This position is a remote/work from home position and requires reliable internet access, a dedicated workspace.

Compensation: The NFF offers competitive compensation and benefits and has recently implemented a new compensation program as part of our commitment to transparency. The salary range for this position will be in the $58,240 to $73,008 range and may be eligible for locality adjustment. Please note that the indicated salary range describes the full range for an incumbent in this position. New staff generally start around the 35th percentile of the range percentile to ensure internal salary equity.

Requirements:

Education and Qualifications: NFF expects the Wood for Life Coordinator to possess the following educational and experiential qualifications:

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in conservation, forestry, planning, landscape design, recreation planning, environmental science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least three (3) years of work experience with conservation programs, project planning, restoration programs, and/or coordinating project implementation.
  • Involvement in project planning, coordination, accomplishment and budget tracking, and project operations management that involve multiple implementation partners, contractors, contracts for services, and funding sources.
  • Experience with land and watershed science, policy, and management, including fire science, vegetation management, wildlife conservation, and/or meadow and stream restoration.
  • Commitment to the mission of the NFF and familiarity with the U.S. Forest Service purpose and National Forest lands management.
  • An understanding of Arizona natural resource issues.
  • Deep familiarity with and knowledge of the history and peoples of Arizona, including lived experience, work, and/or training based in or connected to Indigenous communities.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and administrative skills.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Abilities and Skills: NFF expects the Wood for Life Coordinator to possess the following abilities and skills:

  • Ability to understand and clearly communicate about forest restoration treatment types and systems, including restoration prescriptions, on-the-ground operations, treatment specifications, guidelines, and desired conditions for a diversity of forest and watershed ecosystem projects.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people with differing and sometimes conflicting opinions, and to always maintain neutrality.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly, work in outdoor conditions, and maintain a flexible work schedule, including participation in weekend and evening events.
  • Ability to work well and be flexible in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to represent the NFF in a clear and professional manner through excellent written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • A strong attention to detail, with skill in working in a timely and well-organized fashion.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS online, Avenza, and basic mapping in support of project management.
  • Writing skills and public speaking experience.
  • A valid U.S. Driver's License.
