Wilderness Trail Crew Leader

Start Date: Mid April, 2025 End Date: Late September, 2025

Hourly Wage: $19.00-$21.00 DOE

Duty Station: Missoula, MT. Housing is typically not provided for staff positions.

Be the example and lead the charge in getting wild work done in two of the largest Wilderness Areas in the lower 48! Utilizing strong technical skills in traditional tool use, trail maintenance and backcountry travel, train and lead young adults and volunteers on 8-day backpacking hitches of Wilderness trail maintenance in the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Areas. (multiple vacancies)

Wilderness Assistant Crew Leader

Start Date: Mid April, 2025 End Date: Late September, 2025

Hourly Wage: $17.00-$18.50 DOE

Duty Station: Missoula, MT. Housing is typically not provided for staff positions. 

Hone your technical and leadership skills while opening pathways in the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Areas! Work consists of 8-day backpacking trail maintenance projects assisting a Wilderness Trail Crew Leader in project management and on the ground leadership for young adults and volunteers, as well as all-staff hitches supporting a Wilderness Trail Crew Leader. (multiple vacancies)

Youth Wilderness Expedition Leader

Start Date: Early-Mid April, 2025 End Date: Late September, 2025 (can end early if the candidate must return to school)

Hourly Wage: $19.00-$21 DOE

Duty Station: Missoula, MT. Housing is typically not provided for staff positions. 

Connect youth to wilderness and forge the leaders and stewards of tomorrow! Lead small groups of teenagers from Idaho and Montana on immersive backpacking trips into the largest wilderness complex in the lower 48! SBFC’s youth wilderness expeditions are equal parts experiential learning, recreation, and volunteer stewardship work that helps improve wilderness accessibility.

Wilderness Volunteer Project Leader

Start Date: Mid April, 2025 End Date: Late September, 2025  (Note: may end earlier if the candidate must return to school)

Hourly Wage: $19.00-$21.00 per hour (DOE)

Duty Station: Missoula, MT (Housing not typically provided)

Are you passionate about wilderness stewardship and eager to lead groups in remote, beautiful areas? We are seeking a dedicated Wilderness Volunteer Project Leader to guide and inspire teams of volunteers in backcountry trail work and conservation efforts. If you’re ready to take on the responsibility of managing volunteer projects that help preserve the natural heritage of the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Areas, we want to hear from you!
